The Other Theatre Company, one of Chicago's newest equity companies, announced its 2015-2016 season of four world premiers this week. Featuring bold stories by up-and-coming authors alongside modern riffs on classic tales, The Other Theatre Company seems to be reinventing itself after an inaugural season featuring productions of Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 and Bent.
Launching the season will be Savanna Rae's Daughters of Ire, directed by Artistic Director Carin Silkaitis. The one-woman play is described as a "breathless, feminist look at celtic mythology." Though Rae is a young performer, credits to her name (aside from The Other Theatre Co.) include Chicago Shakespeare Theatre and Oak Park Festival Theatre. Daughters of Ire was previously workshopped through North Central College, Chicago Dramaworks, and The Other Theatre Co. The production will be accompanied by a podcast version of the text, featuring Rae, and co-presented by The Other Theatre Co. and Chicago Dramaworks.
TOTC will continue their season with their first-ever musical production, entitled Barney the Elf. Written by Bryan Renaud (All Our Twilight, Ladies Night of the Living Dead) the pop musical is a reimaging of the Will Ferrell classic Elf, in which Barney the Elf is kicked out of the North Pole by a bigoted Santa Claus for being gay. The production, directed by Carin Silkaitis, will feature Yando Lopez in the leading role and choreography by Tommy Rivera-Vega.
In February 2016, the company will stage two premieres in rep entitled Other Letters. Described as a queer-take on the ever-popular Love Letters, the production will play eight nights through the month with a rotating cast of Chicago's biggest names. The play is a collaborative work created by TOTC's collective of writers.
Finally, the season will close with the premiere of The Hole, written by Bryan Renaud and starring Carin Silkaitis. Inspired by interviews with formerly incarcerated women, the play explores the lives of several women after leaving prison. The Hole will receive a workshop production directed by Kelly Howe at North Central College later this month.
