The MoonSharks Present: An Improvised Play is presented as part of the LookOut Series - Steppenwolf’s performance series that presents the work of artists and companies across genre and form. The performances will be held on Friday June 8 and Saturday June 9, 2018 in Steppenwolf’s 1700 Theatre (1700 N. Halsted St, Chicago 60614). Tickets for the show are $15 for general admission. Tickets are available for cash or credit at the door, or online at www.steppenwolf.org. The show’s running time is 1 hour and 30 minutes, including one 10-minute intermission.
This ensemble of nine veteran Chicago performers take to the stage to improvise a full-length play. Using a suggestion from the audience, The MoonSharks create a story with rich characters, complex relationships, and powerful themes. Under the direction of current Second City faculty member David Montgomery, The MoonSharks present this improvised artistic endeavour, which has been over five years in the making.
The MoonSharks Present: An Improvised Play is an exclusive two-night performance. After experiencing a diverse sampling of Chicago music, spoken word poetry, and dramatic readings, The MoonSharks will create a new, improvised play for audiences. Each night is a completely unique performance and features an improviser crafting a live score and soundtrack by blending popular music styles from throughout history. These original performances are not wholly comedy or drama, but rather a hybrid of the two.
“The MoonSharks are excited and honored to be performing on Steppenwolf’s 1700 stage,” says Ethan Goldman, a member of The MoonSharks. “Learning improv at Illinois State University, The Steppenwolf Theatre has always represented the pinnacle of performance art in the city of Chicago.”
“When The MoonSharks hit the stage, they blew me away,” says Jimmy Carrane, Host of the Improv Nerd Podcast. “What impressed me was their scene work. They played grounded and emotionally reacted to each other in their scenes seamlessly. They had incredible chemistry — the type you get only by enjoying playing with each other for a long time.”
"The MoonSharks are the epitome of what improv is about,” says Keith Habersberger of The Try Guys and Buzzfeed. “Every show is the perfect balance of comedy, friendship, and genuine emotion. To not see their shows is to deprive yourself of a perfect evening of comedy."

ABOUT THE MOONSHARKS
After improvising for years together at Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University, this group of nine close friends all moved to Chicago in 2012 and decided to form The MoonSharks. For the past six years, The MoonSharks have appeared in the Chicago Improv Festival, taught corporate workshops, provided educational improv for students of all ages, played at improv theaters throughout the Chicagoland area, and developed numerous experimental short form games and long form styles. Their latest creation, the Improvised Play, directed by Second City faculty member, David Montgomery, has been a featured, sell-out show in two runs at Second City's Blackout Cabaret.
