(sub)version productions is proud to announce their premiere season of productions. Season 1: Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll features three fully realized productions, Dark Side of the Boob, Voyeur, and The Buttcracker: A Nutcracker Burlesque, as well as their hit game show The Chicago Puntathlon, and aims to present innovative and genre-defying programming that subverts audiences’ expectations and celebrates joy, laughter, freedom, and sensuality.
In April, just in time for the 4/20 celebrations, the company will premiere their newest immersive burlesque experience, Dark Side of the Boob: A Wizard of Oz Burlesque Experience. The show presents a total sensory experience by combining a video and lighting FX show with the cult combination of L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz and Pink Floyd’s classic as a backdrop for some of Chicago’s best in burlesque. Audiences will be allowed to revel in the legalization of cannabis, eat from local food trucks and breweries, and experience something unlike anything else in Chicago.
In the heat of the summer, the company will premiere Voyeur, which explores themes of power and pleasure through narrative scenes of BDSM, shibari, and kink. Teaming up with six professional Dominants and submissives of diverse gender, sexuality, race, ability, and age, the show will also feature additional educational programming after the show so that audiences may learn more about the kink community.
In December the company will present its flagship production, The Buttcracker: A Nutcracker Burlesque. Now in its fifth season, The Buttcracker: A Nutcracker Burlesque subverts the classic holiday ballet to promote diversity in body, gender expression, sexuality, and race. The show utilizes the platform of parody to encourage audiences to imagine a more inclusive world, redefining the art of the tease through an alternative take on burlesque. The company hopes to not only perform in Chicago, but tour to St. Louis, Detroit, and Cleveland as well.
Finally, in the first weeks of June and October, The Chicago Puntathlon, Chicago’s only pun competition, will return to The Call Bar. With a rotating cast of judges and performers, The Chicago Puntathlon features five pun games with audience interaction, in a fast-paced, improvised-style game show where the winner walks home with $100 cash and is crowned Dad of the Year.
