Hawk writer Ryan Moore celebrates another year with his favorite five productions from 2017. You can also check out Jason Berger's list and Emily Schmidt's list here.
The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity (Red Theater)
Chad Deity was by far my favorite show that I reviewed in 2017. Red Theater's production featured a strong cast from end to end, with flawlessly-executed wrestling choreography, and it was all wrapped up in a poignant social message that had real bite. Red Theater should be commended for its revival; if it ever makes a return, go see this show.
The Invisible Scarlet O'Neil (Babes With Blades)
Babes With Blades' offering featured the most inventive set design I saw all year. Focused projections were used for everything from exposition dumps to choreographed fight scenes, really selling the comic book aesthetic. The Invisible Scarlet O'Neil was a highly entertaining superhero story told in a non-traditional format by a talented cast.
Fade (Victory Gardens/Teatro Vista)
No line of dialogue or story arc was wasted in this powerful discussion on Latinx race relations in America, making it clear that Fade's script comes from a season writer (Tanya Saracho of How to Get Away With Murder and Looking.) Highly engaging and heartfelt, this was an easy choice to include on my favorites for the year.
Perfect Arrangement (Pride Films & Plays)
Pride Films and Plays created a truly immersive experience with their production of Perfect Arrangement, transporting the audience to the white suburbs of the 1950’s which made the dramatic irony of the show’s plot all the more powerful. The production inflated tension throughout, leading to a devastating finale.
The School for Lies (The Artistic Home)
Who knew Moliere’s 17th century comedy of errors would be so well suited to adaptation? Entirely written in verse, it was apparent that the cast put in countless hours to master the difficult dialogue present in The School for Lies. The Artistic Home perfectly blended Moliere’s signature wit with modern sensibilities to create a highly entertaining show.
