MCL Chicago has announced that the company will disband effective March 1st, 2018.
The company, which rebranded in 2014 from its previous name of "Studio BE" was known for its eclectic mix of music and comedy performances (MCL, after all, stands for "Music, Comedy, Live."
“Because of the cap on revenue that we’re able to make within the space, it just doesn’t make sense for us to put in the time and effort to continue to operate the venues as is,” Michael Shepherd Jordan, MCL's Managing Director, told the Chicago Tribune in a statement. Jordan also seems to imply that the company may continue producing as an itinerant organization.
The theater company was one of few in Chicago to offer a payment model which would allow producers to pay their rental fees from box office receipts, similar to Gorilla Tango Theatre, which shuttered last month.
MCL Chicago is located at 3110 N. Sheffield Ave, where regularly scheduled performances will continue through January 31st, 2018.
