In a shocking turn of events, the Chicago Sun-Times has announced that Hedy Weiss' position has been eliminated. Chris Fusco, editor-in-chief of the paper stated Friday: "She’s had a remarkable 33-year career covering the theater and arts scene in Chicago, and we wish her well. The Sun-Times is excited about Chicago’s burgeoning arts community, and we look forward to rolling out new coverage plans in the future.”
Weiss has been the center of multiple national controversies over her career due to her openly racist, sexist, and otherwise problematic views. Only eight months ago, the newspaper defended her position with the company despite the Chicago Theater Accountability Coalition amassing over 2,000 signatures calling for her removal. One of her few supporters was Chicago Tribune theatre critic Chris Jones.
It's unclear exactly how the Chicago Sun-Times will restructure their theatre coverage - but we certainly hope they will open their doors to new, progressive voices.
