The trials and tribulations of adolescence have longed served as fodder for adult comedy--having now (presumably) passed that threshold, it’s amusing to look back and remember how tragic losing that spelling bee trophy was. But there’s so much more to it than pimples and puberty, and Clare Barron’s Pulitzer Prize Finalist Dance Nation, now playing at Steppenwolf Theatre, understands and celebrates that. From its hilariously dark opening number to its reverberating conclusion, Barron’s exploration of the invincibility and vulnerability of a pre-teen dance troupe serves as a poignant reminder of how the past shapes the present.

“The Adult in the Room,” a new play by Bill McMahon about the life of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, will receive its world premiere Jan. 26 at Chicago’s Victory Gardens Theater’s Richard Christiansen Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue, starring acclaimed Broadway, television and film actress Orlagh Cassidy. Directed by Heather Arnson and Conor Bagley, the play is produced by Tony/Emmy/Olivier Award-winning producer Jim Kierstead (“Kinky Boots,” “Pippin,” “Hadestown”) Emmy Award-winning producer Linda Karn (“Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine”) and Broadway producer William Fernandez (“The Inheritance,” “The Great Comet”). Drury Lane Theatre announces casting for the final show in its 2019/2020 season, the Regional Premiere of the beautifully captivating Gershwin musical An American in Paris. Leading the cast are Josh Drake as American GI Jerry Mulligan and Leigh-Ann Esty as Lise Dassin. Drake can currently be seen on Broadway in Disney’s Aladdin, and Esty returns to An American in Paris after playing the role of Lise on the show’s national tour. This Tony Award-winning musical features music and lyrics by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin with book by Craig Lucas and is directed and choreographed by Lynne Kurdziel-Formato. Today the Neo-Futurist Theater announced that Artistic Director Kurt Chiang will step down from his role as the leader of Chicago’s premiere experimental theater company to make way for new leadership in early 2020. Neo-Futurist Ensemble Member Kirsten Riiber will succeed Chiang as Artistic Director. Chiang will continue his role as a Neo-Futurist Ensemble Member.
